Check us out...we are rocking our PINK in support of PINK Shirt Day. Today we are going that extra mile to be kind to everyone and we are ensuring that we all feel included and our PINK shows that we can stand up to BULLIES!
Our kindness doesn't stop here...we now are aware of how our actions and words can hurt, so we will do our best to always be kind and include everyone! Tomorrow is PINK Shirt Day. Our class set a goal to have the ENTIRE class wearing something pink to support anti-bullying. I am hoping that we all can find a little pink to wear, but if you can't, Mrs. Sloane has washable PINK hairspray. If you are okay with your child getting a small spray in their hair, please write a note in their agenda. Here is a quick video explaining how Pink Shirt Day began! ![]() What: Inuit Celebration of Learning When: Tuesday, March 8th Time: 4:00-6:00 Open House Where: Grade 2 classrooms at Edgemont School We have been playing many different addition and subtraction math games to reinforce our mental math skills, but also to build our mathematical thinking. As we play these games we focus on explaining our thinking. Instead of saying 26+43=69, we say 20+40=60 AND 6+3=9, so 60+9=69.
Try these games at home and make sure you explain your THINKING! Race to 100 or Race to 0 with a focus on Doubles and Near Doubles (Hundreds Chart, Dice and markers) Double Trouble; Speed, Highest or Lowest Numbers (Deck of Cards and Dice) Subtraction Snap (Deck of Cards) To understand the communities past, students participated in a 'See Think Wonder' routine with Inuit artifacts and through this process they began to understand and appreciate how the community has emerged over time.
To extend the ‘See Think Wonder’ routine, students have brought in Personal artifacts. Students have had the opportunity complete the 'See Think Wonder' routine on 3 of their classmates' artifacts and starting on Monday they will have the chance to share the story behind their personal artifact with the class. Through this process, we hope that if students have the opportunity to tell the story behind their artifact, they in turn, will be able to gain a better appreciation for the story behind the Inuit artifacts. Mrs. Dressel found an article with an update on the Bison project in Banff National Park. We were excited to read that the project is right on track and the Bison will be here in January 2017!
Here is the full article below if you'd like to read it! http://calgaryherald.com/storyline/despite-concerns-up-to-40-bison-are-expected-to-be-on-the-ground-in-banff-national-park-within-a-year TOMORROW...Wednesday, February 10th we will be going to the Telus Spark Science Centre. Here are a few things families need to know about the day.
1. Be early for school, ready to enter the doors when the bell rings at 8:58 AM. Do not arrive late as we are not waiting for LATE students. 2. Studnets will leave their backpacks at school...they will ONLY bring their lunch! Bring a lunch that has little to no garbage. 3. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. It's going to be a nice day again, so please leave your winter boots, mittens, toques, and scarves at home and wear outdoor shoes and a jacket. 4. Do not bring a water bottle on the trip as the science centre has many water fountains. 5. Please ensure your child brings any necessary medications (e.g. EpiPen, asthma inhaler). 6. Parent volunteers, please be at the school by 8:40 AM for a meeting in the Learning Commons. We are excited to see everyone tomorrow for our exciting boats and buoyancy field trip to Telus Spark! Today, Kevin from Nixon Honey came to accept the cheque from the Grade Two See a Problem BEE the Solution Fundraiser. We raised a total of $600 and that money is now going to the Canadian Bee Research Fund and it will go towards 3 different projects that will help the beekeeping community across Canada. Today, we CHANGED THE WORLD!
As a THANK YOU, Kevin kindly brought each student in Grade Two a small jar of Nixon Honey and 2 Honey Sticks! We promise we will share the entire process when we are done...but we couldn't resist sharing what we did today! It was so MESSY and so much FUN!
THANK YOU to all of my families for coming to conferences. It was great to share the incredible work that is happening in our classroom.
We will be going to Telus Spark for a Floating and Boating program on Wednesday, February 10th. If you have a valid security clearance and you are available to volunteer, please e-mail me at [email protected] Pink Shirt Day is on February 24th http://pinkshirtday.ca This year Pink Shirt Day is "encouraging everyone to openly express that “Kindness is one size fits all”. We all have the capacity to spread kindness and that is the underlying philosophy behind our anti-bullying movement: a movement we hope lives year round beyond Pink Shirt Day. After all, kindness never goes out of style." Leading up to Pink Shirt Day, we will build upon our friendship skills, identify what bullying does and doesn't look like and discuss ways to handle situations that may involve bullying. Also, if students would like to, they will have the opportunity to exchange Valentine Cards on February 9th. To reinforce the idea that "kindness is one size that fits all", I am encouraging students to personalize their Valentine Cards with kind and caring words for their classmates. An example might be; Dear Mrs. Kim I like you because you are always smiling and seeing you smile, makes me smile and brightens my day! Happy Valentine's Day! Your Friend Mrs. Sloane Students will bring home a list of their classmates this week! |
